Calls To Name Pier Park After Cyril Romney Continue

Another call was made for the Tortola Pier Park or an area of the facility to be named after former Chief Minister Cyril Romney who has been referred to as “the father of the cruise ship business.”

The suggested renaming was mentioned by Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark Vanterpool during the Other Business section of the 28 December sitting of the House of Assembly. In making the suggestion Hon. Vanterpool said: “I want to ask members’ support on it and see that we can bring that forward and name that cruise pier the Cyril B Romney Tortola Cruise Pier.”

Hon. Vanterpool noted the contributions the former Chief Minister has made to the industry and he noted that his children are still operating within the industry. In fact, he noted that the Romney family continues to be active in the cruise business and he said that they are in contact with government on matters to develop the industry.

“I want to really thank him and his family because the family continues to be a major part and play a major role in the success of the cruise ship business in the territory. It represents so many of the companies and do such a good job with the tours and gives so many good suggestions as we go along,” Hon. Vanterpool told his colleagues.

This is not the first time that the Minister for Communications and Works has called for the renaming of the facility. However, this is the first time he has mentioned the renaming of the entire facility. In fact, when the suggestion was made on 16 February 2016 Hon. Vanterpool announced that an area of the cruise pier/park would be named in honour of Romney.

He announced: “It is my hope and expectation, that before I leave Office, the name Cyril B. Romney, will be a more prominent feature of this Cruise Pier Park.”

The first public mention that the Pier Park should be renamed after the former Chief Minister was made by then Minister for Health and Social Development, and current Leader of the Opposition Hon Ronnie Skelton during the 2012 budget debate.
